MESHCHERSKAYA, EKATERINA
Comrade Princess - Memoirs of an Aristocrat in Modern Russia
London, Doubleday. 1990, First Edition. (ISBN: 0385269102). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy apart from a neat inscription and date to front endpaper with a VG+ price clipped dustjacket. 228 pages. 18 illustrations. Princess Ekaterina Meshcherskaya was born in 1904, and lived the latter part of her life in Moscow in a tiny caretaker's apartment surrounded by relics and souvenirs of her family's past, the last of the Russian princesses living in Russia. Glasnost has enabled this remarkable woman to publish her story for the first time. She was only 13 years old when the Bolsheviks seized power in 1917, and unlike the vast majority of aristocrats who fled the country after the Revolution, she and her mother forged new lives in a society now resentful and hostile towards the privileged classes. Their world of servants, pedigree dogs, a Greek tutor, French and German governesses, vast estates, was lost at a stroke, leaving them alone and penniless. Yet Ekaterina and her mother, a musically talented and iron willed young woman, overcame the challenges, denounced and arrested constantly, and Ekaterina worked in countless jobs as seamstress, dancer, singing teacher, even wartime ditch digger, in order to survive. ROPER, ROBERT
Nabokov in America - on the Road to Lolita
New York, Bloomsbury USA. 2015, First. (ISBN: 9780802743633). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A new unread copy with new dustjacket. First Edition, First Printing. 354 pages. Illustrations in the text. Map endpapers. The author of the immortal Lolita nd Pale Fire, born to a distinguished Russian family, represents for many the apotheosis of the high modernist artist: cultured, refined - as European as they come. But Vladimir Nabokov, who came to America to escape the Nazis, grew to think of his time there as the richest of his life. Here and his Jewish wife could live and breathe, here they raised a beloved son in safety and normalcy. Robert Roper fills out this period of Nabokov's life with charm and insight - covering Nabokov's friendship with Edmund Wilson, his time at Wellesley and Cornell, his long work at Harvard's Museum of Comparative Zoology. But the book finds its narrative heart in the writer's many summer sojourns in the wilds of the American West. The Nabokovs covered more than two hundred thousand miles by car as Vladimir indulged his most overwhelming passion - not for literature but for butterfly hunting. The book is also a love letter to American literature, tracing Nabokov's broad and ingenious embrace of it. Steeped in Russian, British, French and classical literature, he read prolifically among American writers or years. L. New/New.
